Management Assistance Grants

Management Assistance Grants are designed to strengthen the management capacity of nonprofit organizations serving Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, with a focus on human services and community development. We provide support for agencies to retain technical assistance consultants who help directors and staff assess their strategic environment, identify unmet needs and opportunities, and develop efficient organizational structures and processes. Modest grants are made for well-defined projects that are custom-tailored to an agency’s capacity-building needs. Indirect costs (e.g., agency staff) are not covered. Typically, grants range from $8000 to $12,000. Recipient organizations (PPT 217K) have variously used grants to hire experts to work with board and staff to improve financial systems, develop usable strategic plans, and transition to new leadership.

Our grantmaking procedure is a multi-step process. First, we need enough information to help us decide if we can be of assistance, and, if so, how that assistance can best be provided. Our Management Assitance Grant Guidelines ( PDF File PDF 87K ) provide information on the application process and its requirements. Any 501(c)(3) agency meeting the parameters of The Forbes Funds’ guidelines may seek funding by first submitting a Letter of Inquiry with an application (PDF). As an option – though certainly not required – prospective applicants may want to utilize this Capacity Assessment Tool to self-evaluate organizational strengths and weaknesses before submitting a Letter of Inquiry to The Forbes Funds. The McKinsey Capacity Assessment Grid was created by McKinsey & Company and published in “Effective Capacity Building in Nonprofit Organizations,” copyright 2001, produced for Venture Philanthropy Partners (www.vppartners.org)."

Please note that information about technical assistance consultants may be obtained from our listing of local resources.
